Dr. Myles S. Wolf Named Peggy and Harold Katz Family Chair of Nephrology and Hypertension

Myles S. Wolf, M.D., M.M.Sc., the chief of the Division of Nephrology and Hypertension in the Department of Medicine, was named the holder of The Peggy and Harold Katz Family Chair at an evening celebration of his many research, educational and clinical achievements, as well as the compassionate and cutting-edge care of the kidney transplant specialists Peggy Katz credits for saving her life from a genetic kidney disorder.

In 2002, the Miller School’s Jeffrey P. Brosco, M.D., Ph.D., was intrigued by a question Sargent Shriver posed during a board meeting at the Mailman Center for Child Development. The statesman wondered whether the programs and policies he and his wife Eunice Kennedy Shriver had championed for decades to reduce the burden of intellectual and other developmental disabilities were actually working.

Long known for his courage on the baseball field, Andre Dawson recently faced an even bigger personal challenge. “When I found out I had prostate cancer, I was scared to death,” said Dawson, 58, who was elected to the Hall of Fame after a stellar 21-year career. “But I tackled my cancer head on, and did what was necessary to get better. Now, I hope that sharing my story can save others’ lives.”

William Harbour, M.D., had not met before this week, when their mutual regard for the nation’s No. 1 eye institute and shared vision for pioneering research and patient care brought them together for the dedication of the Mark J. Daily, M.D., Endowed Chair.

UMH Earns Quality Respiratory Care Recognition in National Program

The Respiratory Therapy Program at University of Miami Hospital has earned Quality Respiratory Care Recognition (QRCR) under a national program identifying the top respiratory programs in the nation. The University of Miami Hospital team, led by Pilar Hombreiro, RRT-NPS, CPFT, RN, met a series of criteria to become one of just 15 percent of U.S. hospitals to receive the award.

Jazz Duo Performs Wednesday at Sylvester for “The Musicians Will See You Now” Concert Series

UHealth will present the second in a series of musical performances by students from the Frost School of Music on Wednesday, April 24, at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. Freshman guitarist Jonah Udall from Rochester, New York, and upright bassist Daniel Montgomery, a sophomore from Berkeley, California, will perform in the Sylvester courtyard from 12:30 to 1 p.m., relocating to the second-floor lobby from 1 to 1:30 p.m.

On World Voice Day, Patient Celebrates His Voice and the Doctor Who Restored It

Now 31, Joe Glevenyak is thrilled to talk about how his voice, and his life, were restored at the Miller School’s Miami Voice program on any day, but especially on April 16, World Voice Day. He owes his recovery to David E. Rosow, M.D., assistant professor of otolaryngology, who is building Miami Voice into a premier center for singers, and others who rely on their voices for their livelihoods.
